Ink Is Cheaper Than Film
March 3, 2006 Art No Comments
Neil Gaiman talks about comics and movies. I particularly liked the idea that comics are somehow less legitimate than movies, when the majority of movies suck buttholes and no movie has yet been better than the comic that produced it (though I think Sin City is pretty damn close).
Comics are also better than books, if the subject matter is the same– show me one novelization of a comic book that was better than the original comic.
Still, the thinking often goes both ways– comic adaptations of books and movies usually suck. But maybe that tends to be because the original art form is usually better than a derivative version of the work. If I write a great comic, it doesn’t translate so well to film because it wasn’t meant to. It was meant to be a comic!
This followed a day in which I talked to educators about comics. Seriously, parents and teachers, get your kids reading comics. Because they’ll be reading. Duh! Sure, comics aren’t always Moby Dick, but they’re better than some of the young adult drivel on the shelves.
