Food One– Check Him

Art No Comments

I don’t remember, has it been a while since I sent you over to look at Jim Mahfood’s site? Because for real, he’s the most gd fun artist in comics right now.

I don’t often think of buying original comics art, but this page is so dope that I sometimes wonder if I should. I don’t know how it hasn’t sold yet.

On a related note (which will now probably take up the majority of this entry), last Friday I was buying some comic books. Cool, it’s what I do. Don’t hate. Anyhow, I’ve got my stash and I’m just doing one last sweep of the shelves to make sure I didn’t miss any new indies or something that Mark Millar might have snuck by.

So, I pause for a second to marvel (pun intended) at the new Young Avengers title. I mean, take a look at the cover:

I mean, could this look more lame?

So I make a snide remark to Jon about how Marvel is really reaching and how Runaways might have done OK with the teen market but this title is headed straight for the dumpster. And Jon, who usually admits that a title is crap when it’s clear that I won’t buy it, says “That’s what I thought, too. But when I finished the first issue, I thought to myself, ‘Damn, I have another title I have to start buying.’”

I almost choked on the little bit of vomit that rose into my mouth. Seriously… not only do they have a Hulk-teen who is drawn so Manga-like that I really wasn’t sure if it was a boy or a girl, but the character’s name is Hulkling. I cannot, for the life of me, think of a more lame idea.

But Jon persisted. So I relented– I would buy the title and read it, and he would refund my money if it was the horseshit that I was expecting.

And dammit, wouldn’t you know, I don’t give a rat’s ass about Asgardian, Hulkling, or Patriot as characters, but damned if I won’t be reading this title. I just finished #3. And I’m with it.

For the first story arc.

Dammit.
